Slash fuel prices, GST rates to reduce inflation, says Congress leader P Chidambaram

The Congress has asked the Centre to immediately check the spiralling rate of inflation and address the misery of ordinary people by bringing down prices of petrol, diesel and LPG by slashing import duties and reducing GST rates on mass-consumed goods.

Addressing the media at the AICC on Tuesday, former finance minister P Chidambaram said his party and other opposition parties would raise the issue of high inflation in the monsoon session of Parliament and demand a full discussion on the subject.

“A government that is concerned about the welfare of the people – and their hardships and burdens – will not turn the other way when every household is agitated about the rise in prices. The NDA government has continued to pretend that the concern about price rise is false and, if the government ignores the issue, the issue will go away. The Congress party condemns the callous negligence of the government on the issue of price rise,” Chidambaram said.

“Food inflation is at 5.58%. Pulses inflation is at 10.01%. Fruit inflation is at 11.82%. Transport inflation is at 11.56%. Fuel & light inflation is at 12.68 %. And Oils & Fats inflation is at 34.78 %. Will the government please tell the people what they should eat, how they should light their homes and how they should go to work?” he asked.

Asked what he thought of the prime minister retaining Nirmala Sitharaman as finance minister in the recent major ministry reshuffle, Chidambaram said, “everybody in this country knows all decisions are taken by PM Narendra Modi. So, what does it matter if ‘X’ or ‘Y’ is the finance minister? As far as Modi is concerned, he is the finance minister, he is the defence minister, he is the external affairs minister, he is the minister for sports. ”
