Reddy, held in bribery case, in shortlist for brand spanking new DCGI

NEW DELHI : The authorities has short-listed 5 candidates to be the brand new Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), together with S. Eswara Reddy, who’s in judicial custody on corruption fees.

The DCGI is supposed to make sure solely high quality medication and cosmetics are offered within the nation, give approval for brand spanking new medication and regulate medical trials. With the current regulator V. G. Somani’s time period set to finish on 14 August, the Union Public Service Commission marketed the place again in February.

Five names have been shortlisted —V. G. Somani, current DCGI, S. Eswara Reddy, joint medication regulator, Rajiv Raghuvanshi, chairman, India Pharmacopeia Commission, Jai Prakash, senior principal scientific officer IPC and P. L. Sahu, director, National Dope Testing Laboratory. A UPSC panel will quickly interview these shortlisted candidates, an official mentioned.

“The recruitment of the brand new DCGI is in course of. Now, the communication is between the ministry of well being and UPSC, and UPSC should give us a date for the interview,” said another official familiar with the matter.


Reddy, one of the eligible candidates is in judicial custody over charges of bribery. He and Biocon’s associate vice president L. Praveen Kumar were named as accused in an FIR lodged under the prevention of corruption act allegedly over phase 3 clinical trials for an insulin injection.

“The demand and acceptance are the two major elements to constitute a crime under bribery and both these two elements are missing in the case of my client. At the moment, the immediate relief we are seeking from the Hon’ble High court of Delhi is bail,” advocate Arun Khatri, counsel for Reddy mentioned, including no cash had been recovered from his consumer.

Biocon strongly denied allegations in opposition to the corporate and its officers. Queries despatched to the well being ministry had been unanswered.
