After ‘Durga Puja’ will get UNESCO intangible heritage tag, India nominates ‘Garba’

Almost a yr after Kolkata’s Durga Puja pageant was awarded the UNESCO tag underneath intangible cultural heritage listing, the Indian authorities has nominated the standard dance type of Garba of Gujarat for inclusion within the listing.

However, UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Secretary Tim Curtis stated that nomination shall be thought-about for the following yr cycle solely.

“The latest nomination will be considered for the next year cycle. The nomination files will be examined by the evaluation body mid-2023 and the inscription will be decided at the 2023 session of the committee by the end of next year,” Curtis stated.

While presentation made at an occasion held on the National Museum to mark the UNESCO tag awarded to Kolkata’s Durga Puja pageant final December, Curtis confirmed a slide of Garba that talked about the “file was currently undergoing technical treatment by the Secretariat”.

Currently, India has 14 Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) parts that are inscribed on this listing, together with Ramlila, Vedic Chants, Kumbh Mela and the most recent being Kolkata’s Durga Puja.

India had obtained the honour of Kolkata’s Durga Puja being inscribed on the coveted listing on the committee’s sixteenth session held at Paris.

The pageant was recommended by the committee for its initiatives to contain marginalised teams, and people in addition to ladies of their participation in safeguarding the component.

Director and UNESCO Representative for the UNESCO New Delhi Office, Eric Falt, had stated the inclusion of Durga Puja within the listing represents how all stakeholders got here collectively.

“India, perhaps offers more intangible cultural heritage practices than any other country in the world. And, many of them are in need of safeguarding. We at UNESCO work closely with the government of India in preservation of monument and the intangible cultural heritage, which many times tourists miss or are not much aware about,” he stated.
